HRT Prescription Policy Update

Important changes to your repeat HRT prescriptions

The 28-Day prescribing policy

HRT prescriptions will be moving to a 28-day prescribing cycle to bring them in line with NHS guidelines for all repeat medications.

Why is this changing?

  • To help reduce medication waste.
  • To align with our local Integrated Care board guidance, which recommends all repeat prescriptions be issued on a 28-day cycle.

Exceptions to the 28-day prescribing policy

Excluded are those medications that are packaged by manufacturers in a manner that makes them unsuitable for 28-day prescribing.

Will this cost more if you pay for prescriptions?

No; to save on costs apply for the NHS HRT Prescription Prepayment Certificate[1]. This one-off payment covers all eligible HRT items for a full year.[2]

What about convenience?

We understand collecting medication every 28 days may be less convenient for patients who only use HRT. However, this ensures fairness and consistency across all medications.

When will this happen?

The transitions starts immediately. Our aim is for all patients to be moved to the 28-day prescribing cycle by the end of April 2026.

Thank you for your understanding and co-operation.
